NATIONAL
DEFENCE ACADEMY (NDA) EXAM
One of the most
competitive defence exams in the nation, the NDA is used to choose applicants
for admission to the Indian Naval Academy and National Defence Academy
programs. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the
highly prestigious, The National Defence
Academy (NDA) Exam. Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force aspirants can give
this exam to join these forces.
Eligibility Criteria:
· Nationality: a) Must be an Indian citizen b)
Subject of Nepal or Bhutan c) A person of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan,
Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United
Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia and Vietnam with the
intention of permanently settling in India.
· Educational Qualification:
For Army Wing- Candidates who
have passed 10+2 or equivalent can apply for the exam.
For Air Force and
Naval Wing-
Class 12 pass with physics and mathematics.
· Age Limit: 16.5 years to 19.5 years
· Marital Status: Only unmarried candidates can apply
for the exam.

- Selection Process: NDA exam is held twice a year, April and September. It is conducted in two stages: Written Examination and SSB Interview.
· Written Examination: This comprises of two subjects Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT). Mathematics contains 120 questions having 2.5 marks per question, and GAT contains 150 questions having 4 marks per question. For every wrong answer 1.33 is deducted in GAT and 0.83 in Mathematics. The total marks of the paper are 900 and for each section 2.5 hours is given. The sectional cut off for the exam is 25%. The paper pattern is objective-type.

· SSB Interview: SSB Interview has a total of 900
marks which is conducted in two stages- The first stage has Officer
Intelligence Rating (OIR) and Picture Perception (PP) & Description Test
(DT), tests and the second stage has psychology tests and the conference. This
interview assesses intelligence, leadership, physical fitness, and psychological
aptitude.
A medical fitness
test is also conducted to check whether the candidate is mentally and
physically fit to join these forces. There are certain medical standards which
needs to be met in order to secure a place in the NDA.
· Medical Fitness Test: Clearing
the Medical fitness Test is important for National Defence Academy Exam. It is
conducted to ensure that candidates are mentally and physically fit to be able
to join the academy. It is conducted by a panel of qualified doctors and
professionals who evaluate the overall health of the candidate.
Medical Standards-
Height and Weight- The minimum height considered for
male candidate is 157.5cm and female candidate 152cm. The weight, however, may
vary from person to person and their height and age.
Vision- Candidates must have 6/6 vision,
without any colorblindness or night blindness.
ENT- Candidate must not have any ear,
throat and nose chronic diseases.
Hearing- Candidates having hearing loss may
be rejected however hearing aids are considered as long as the minimum
standards are matched.
Dental- Healthy gums and jaws are too
required for the NDA.
Orthopedic- There must not be any joint surgeries
or bone fractures history for a candidate appearing for NDA. The common reason
for rejection is flat feet, knock knees and other orthopedic issues.
Mental- There must not be any history of
mental problem, epilepsy, or psychological inability.
Cardiovascular- Candidates must have normal heart
rate, blood pressure, and ECG readings. Only a well-controlled condition is
considered until it hampers the duties.
Syllabus for the Written Examination:
· GAT: English, Vocabulary, Comprehension, Cohesion, Grammar and Usage and General Knowledge (Physics, Chemistry, Social Studies, Current Events, Geography and General Science).
· Mathematics: Algebra, Calculus, Trigonometry,
Matrices and Determinants, Vector Algebra, Statistics, Probability and Geometry
of two and three dimension.
