The SSC GD (Staff Selection Commission General Duty) exam is a national-level recruitment exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) to select candidates for various posts in paramilitary forces like  Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the Border Security Force (BSF),  National Investigation Agency (NIA), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and Secretariat Security Force (SSF). The exam also recruits for the post of Rifleman (GD) in the Assam Rifles.

Who is Eligible?

To be eligible for the SSC GD exam, candidates should  meet the  criteria explained below:

Nationality:

l  The applicant must hold Indian citizenship.

Age Limit:

l  For students belonging to General Category: 18 to 23 years.

l  OBC Category: 18 to 26 years (3 years of age relaxation).

l  SC/ST Category: 18 to 28 years (5 years of age relaxation).

l  Ex-servicemen: Age relaxation of 3 years beyond the upper age limit.

Note: Age is calculated as of a particular cutoff date, which is usually mentioned in the official notification.

Educational Qualifications:

Applicants must have completed Matriculation (10th grade) or an equivalent qualification from a recognized board.

Note: Candidates must have the required qualification on or before the application closing date.

Exam Process Stages:

The selection process for SSC GD consists of four main stages:

1.     Computer-Based Examination (CBE)

2.     Physical Efficiency Test (PET)

3.     Physical Standard Test (PST)

4.     Medical Examination

Exam Process in Detail:

1.     Computer-Based Examination (CBE): The CBE is the first stage of the SSC GD exam, consisting of objective-type multiple-choice questions. The subjects and syllabus for the CBE are as follows:

  General Intelligence & Reasoning: 20 Questions (40 Marks)

■     Topics include analogies, similarities, spatial orientation, problem-solving, coding-decoding, and more.

  General Knowledge & General Awareness: 20 Questions (40 Marks)

■     Topics include current events, Indian history, geography, politics, economy, etc.

  Elementary Mathematics: 20 Questions (40 Marks)

■     Topics include number systems, computation of whole numbers, decimals, percentages, profit and loss, etc.

  English/Hindi: 20 Questions (40 Marks)

■     Candidates can choose between English and Hindi. This section assesses vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension.

■     Total: 80 Questions, 160 Marks
Duration: 60 minutes

2.     Physical Efficiency Test (PET): Candidates who qualify for the written exam are called for the PET. The physical test involves running and is gender-specific:

  Male Candidates:

■     Race: 5 km in 24 minutes

■     Race (for Ladakh region): 1.6 km in 6 minutes 30 seconds.

  Female Candidates:

■     Race: 1.6 km in 8 minutes 30 seconds

■     Race (for Ladakh region): 800 meters in 4 minutes.

3.     Physical Standard Test (PST): The physical standards for both male and female candidates are as follows:

  Height:

■     Male: 170 cm (General, SC, OBC), 162.5 cm (ST).

■     Female: 157 cm (General, SC, OBC), 150 cm (ST).

  Chest (for males only):

■     General, SC, OBC: 80 cm (with 5 cm expansion).

■     ST: 76 cm (with 5 cm expansion).

  Weight:

■     Proportionate to height and age as per medical standards.

4.     Medical Examination: Candidates who clear PET and PST undergo a medical examination to assess their overall health and fitness for the job. Candidates must not have any physical or mental illness that may hinder their performance.

How Many Vacancies?

The number of vacancies for SSC GD varies each year based on the needs of the paramilitary forces. Typically, 50,000 to 60,000 vacancies are announced in different categories for both male and female candidates.

How Many Candidates Apply?

On average, 20 to 25 lakh candidates apply for the SSC GD exam every year. The competition is intense as a large number of candidates vie for a limited number of posts.

 

Number of Attempts:

The SSC GD Constable recruitment notification from previous years does not specify a limit on the number of attempts a candidate can make.

What Happens After Clearing the Physical Tests?

After clearing the physical tests (PET and PST), candidates are shortlisted based on merit, which is determined by their performance in the written exam. The selected candidates are then called for the medical examination.
